PromISE Dr.Ing + PhD
What is the “PromISE:
Bi-National Doctoral” Program?
PromISE is a bi-national and structured doctoral program between the University Duisburg-Essen (UDE) in Germany and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Malaysia. Doctoral candidates are offered the unique chance to get a double degree as Dr.-Ing. and Ph.D, execute research in an international scientific environment and become familiar with different cultures between the UDE and UKM. This program is designed as a research project for 3 to 4 years, accompanied by course and colloquia.
The research projects shall be interdisciplinary by nature, combining different fields of science, either within faculties of Engineering or bridging to other faculties. All topics shall also combine strength and support both partner universities and societies.
All projects will be supervised by two professors, one from each university; research is executed at both universities, following the so-called sandwich scheme. Such arrangements will be retained in a cotutelle agreement.
Supervisors – Supervisor 1 should be from UDE if candidate is currently studying at UDE, while Supervisor 2 should be from UKM. Vice-versa, Supervisor 1 should be from UKM if candidate is currently studying at UKM, while Supervisor 2 should be from UDE.
This program is structured in three stages with an overall duration of 3 – 4 years. It is compulsory to spend at least one year at each partner university, continuously or by several research visits. The stages for the program will be:
Students benefit from access to diverse academic resources, including specialized libraries, laboratories, and funding opportunities, which can elevate the quality of their research. The chance to build networks in both academic communities opens doors to collaborative projects and career opportunities that might not be available within a single institution.
DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers bi national doctoral degree at your home university and at a university in Germany: ‘Research Grants - Bi- nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle.’
Actual Research Clusters
Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Engineering or related fields with excellent grades, have a strong quantitative methodological background and a genuine interest in carrying out active research in an international environment.
In order to participate in the program, you must enrol in the UKM as a Ph.D. candidate of UKM then proceed with the collaboration research project with UDE under a Cotutelle Agreement or vice-versa. Students may visit Mercator Office UKM for the application process.

As for UDE, there are no tuition fees since the UDE is a public university located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Although there are no tuition fees at the UDE, but, all students are subject to a social contribution each semester and there might have additional cost depend on your research project.

Germany language
Germany language ability is very important for social activities in Germany. It is better to advice graduate students and his/her family to take Germany language course before going to Germany.
House
In Duisburg, there is no Studentenwerk for graduate students. For first month we need to rent house through a agent because owner just want renter signing the contract. It is very expensive. It is better if PromISE could be a mediator between the owner and the renter, so PromISE could sign the contract on behalf of the renter.
Tuition fee
I got information from PromISE’s staff that tuition fee at UKM is free for undergraduate students, it is fair if this policy could be applied for PhD students.
Bank account, health insurance and student card
When arriving in Duisburg together with undergraduate students, they got bank account, health insurance and student card on first day. For me, I need more than one week to settle them.

Promise Double Degree Programme 2018
My name is Chin Chuin Hao, a PhD student under the PromISE double degree programme between Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universitaet Duisburg-Essen (UDE). My one-year experience at UDE was fantastic.
It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to work with some outstanding colleagues in Germany. I had changed a lot from personal to professional as a researcher. I become more punctual in my daily life after a year in Germany as I am exposed to the punctuality culture of Germans.
On the other hand, I learned a lot from my supervisor, Prof. Dr-Ing. Dieter Schramm who is a renowned researcher in the field of vehicle dynamics and mechatronics. It was my great honour to have this chance to work under such an excellent professor and Prof. Schramm also enlightened me with his constructive comments on my research work. I was also given the opportunity to join the Formula Student team of UDE in a world-class competition in Italy. I opened my eyes to see how the students in Europe countries
